Bloom Biorenewables raises CHF 13 million for market entry
11.04.2025Fribourg-based Bloom Biorenewables wants to decarbonize the chemical industry and has successfully completed a CHF 13 million series A funding round. The new funding will be used over the coming years to scale the company's AAF process and engineer the first-of- a-kind commercial-scale unit, while accelerating market entry.

At the heart of Bloom Biorenewables' technology is their groundbreaking Aldehyde-Assisted Fractionation (AAF) process, developed at the Laboratory of Sustainable and Catalytic Processing (LPDC) at EPFL. This innovative technology efficiently separates the cellulose fraction while stabilizing lignin polymers and hemicellulose-derived sugars. By stabilizing these structures, Bloom Biorenewables can fully valorize lignin and hemicellulose for the first time. This breakthrough is set to disrupt the field of biomass upgrading, offering new pathways for converting plant material into high-value chemicals and materials.

Path to Commercialization
The Series A round was led by Anaïs Ventures and Valquest Partners, with participation from several notable investors, including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Lombard Odier Investment Managers, Capital Risque Fribourg, Btomorrow Ventures, AmcorVentures, Rosebrook and The King Baudouin Foundation, on behalf of R&Co4Generations, the Rothschild & Co philanthropic fund.
The new funding will be used over the coming years to scale the AAF process and engineer the first-of- a-kind (FOAK) commercial-scale unit, while accelerating market entry. This investment marks a pivotal step in the company's mission to revolutionize the materials industry and contribute to a more sustainable future.
