Goal and structure
Additive manufacturing of metals has become increasingly important in recent years and has long since been used for more than just prototyping. It offers an unprecedented degree of design possibilities in the development of new products. However, the mechanisms underlying metal additive manufacturing processes are complex. In order to optimally design the components and realistically assess the various possible applications, a precise knowledge of the influence of material and process parameters on the material properties is required. This course starts precisely at this point. The aim is to give participants an overview of the process chain of metal processing additive manufacturing methods, to explain the influence of different process steps on material properties, and to provide information about the possibilities and limitations in the additive manufacturing of metals.
Engineers, technicians, designers and all other persons involved in the additive manufacturing of metals in product development, manufacturing or quality assurance.
- Overview of additive manufacturing processes of metals (powder bed process, powder nozzle process, other processes)
- Powder production and properties with a focus on additive manufacturing
- Additive manufacturing of Al, Ti, Ni alloys and steels
- Thermal and mechanical post-treatment methods
- Properties of additively manufactured components
Dr. Christian Leinenbach holds a PhD in materials science and is head of the "Alloy Design for Advanced Processing Technologies" group at Empa. He has been working in the field of additive manufacturing of metals since 2011 and his research mainly focuses on the development and optimization of new alloys and composites for additive manufacturing.
